Windows ® 95
I am compiling a list of useful Windows ® 95 pages for those of us who need to figure out how to get out of a crash. Also, I am putting on a list of shareware sites that specialize in Windows ® 95. Of course, Frank Condron's site is the bottom line.
  • Frank's Windows Page This is the best Windows ® page available. If there is a Windows ® resource out there, for 95 or NT, there is a link to it here. Also, Frank is keeping a current list of hardware and software providers.
  • Windows 95.com This has the feel of a Windows ® 95 desktop with cute little icons to guide you to drivers, software and anything else involved with Windows ® 95.

Shareware and Free Software

I have found many links to companies with useful software for download. Of course, since I run a PC with (gag!) Windows ® 95, that is where I have my links.

DISCLAIMER Not to insult anyone's intelligence, but I should make it clear that a lot of this stuff is "shareware." In other words, these people who are providing you the "free" software would like money for it, after a trial period. So please don't sue if using my link somehow gets you in trouble! You have been warned.

  • McAfee's Antivirus FTP Site. This is by far the best anti-virus utility available. The latest versions use the VxD model, which means that it protects your computer with absolutely no slow down. Every month they update the virus definitions. McAfee deserves every penny they ask for.
  • WinVN Newsreader This still ranks as the easiest to use News Viewer and, in my opinion puts the others to shame. What is even better is that it is being provided free of charge.
  • WinSock FTP Client (WS_FTP) By far the easiest FTP client to use. It comes in the free version and a fully featured version available from Ipswitch.
  • Lview Picture Viewer I feel this is about the best picture viewer out. It is TWAIN compliant which means that it can acquire images from your scanner. There is a fee for using it, so be warned.
  • Eudora Eudora Light is the latest version of the freeware program. This page also provides information on the commercial version. If you have the previous version, I highly recommend the upgrade.
  • Shareware.com This is the premier location for shareware and free software. It is the conglomeration of many other shareware sites.

Computer Providers

  • Microsoft Home of Internet Explorer and Windows. 'Nuff said.

  • Hewlett Packard Anybody who thought that HP just made great printers should investigate this page and see what other products this quality company is putting out.

  • Intel Even though their CISC processors have hit their limit, I'm sure Intel has something else up their sleeve. Worth a look.
  • IomegaThe company that has Syquest to shame. Features the new Zip drive. Unfortunately, the new Windows 95 ® upgrade drivers will cost you $29.95. So it goes.
